I think it’s funny to see how some people celebrate Canada Day around here. The same thing probably happens at places during July 4th in the USA.

This is going to be an unpopular little “story” for some. And let me tell beforehand that I believe the way people enjoy there selves is totally up to them. And I know, changing things is not for everybody either.

Living close to the mountains, there are a lot of possibilities to camp here. I myself love to go somewhere with the trailer, hike, enjoy the ease and quietness, but also all the happy people. It’s a great way to “get out” the daily thing.

And that’s the reason why a lot of people pack up, leave the city and go in the direction of the mountains. Take a break of the daily routine.

The routine of “get the kids ready for school”-“go to work”-“pick the kids up”-“go home”-“make diner”-“kids to bed”-“self to bed”. Rinse and repeat every day from Monday to Friday. (This is just an example. There are plenty who don’t work Monday to Friday and who do way more like groceries, cleaning etc.)

And than there is Canada Day.

They leave with the trailer. They get terribly drunk for 2 days in a row. They feel like crap when they get home. And the next day the week starts again.

A week where they start wishing they could change things. Wishing everything was not so expensive. Wishing they could start with making dreams reality.

But that’s the alcohol speaking. Who wants to spend half the money just spend on alcohol, on a month learning how to set up your own business. Become your own boss. Work whenever you want. Right?

That’s not for everybody. That’s just for a few people. You never earn money with a business.

Why would you take that first step?

Maybe you will look into it.

One day.

5 Area’s to grow your business

There are 5 area’s where you can grow your business.

  • The fundamental elements (your business foundation),
  • By finding more Leads (or future clients/customers)
  • By creating more conversions (leads become paying customers)
  • By creating more transactions or sales
  • By creating more profits.

It sounds all extremely logical that this is how you create your revenue and profit, but unfortunately for a lot of business owners this logic is very hard to achieve.

All these 5 area’s are interconnected with each other. Only paying attention to one, and neglecting the other 4 just doesn’t work. On the other hand, spending time on all 5 of them is almost hard to achieve.

For that reason business owners, especially start up’s with just one employer a.k.a. you, are working almost around the clock to create some profit. And that is often the reason why business’s fail.

It’s not business day every day

As I mentioned yesterday, we had an official Canadian holiday. Although not all businesses are closed, a lot of them are. And combined with the weekend we have a nice long weekend to relax.

Because once in a while, even if you have your own business, you have to take time to relax and boost your battery.

My way of relaxing is just doing nothing. Well kind of nothing. Reading a book, not having appointments, enjoying the nice weather and my animals, is my way.

My husband has a very demanding job. His way of relaxing is working with his hands.

A few weeks ago, he started with demolishing our deck in front of the house. This weekend he finally got to the last part. (see picture) He “only” have to do a more few things and than he can start building it up again.

While we at it …. this deck had a terrible foundation and it was literally hanging on rotten wood and a few nails.

Just like businesses, that your business is going and bringing in some money, it doesn’t mean the foundation is solid. You certainly don’t want to wait till everything collapse.

Why ask for a telephone number??

It looks like it’s very popular these days to ask for not only an e-mail address, but also for an telephone number.

I don’t know about you, personally I find this very annoying. I try not to give out too much information, when I am on the internet and when I like to receive something interesting, I use a “special” email, which I created some time ago.

But on the other hand, as a marketer, asking for a phone number has a huge advantage above just asking for an email.

Look at yourself. Do you always open the emails you receive? On regular basis I don’t even look at it at all. I look at the subject and hit that “delete” button just as fast.

It’s a different story when I receive a text. Although I can block numbers, for some reason I never do that. Maybe laziness, maybe something else, but probably for the same reason why I don’t hit that un-subscribe button.

But still, I don’t read that email, but I do read that text.

Nowadays it’s way easier to reach out to someone by sending a text (NOT phone) than email them.

Try it out. See how you are able to send more people into your funnel with a simple text.

The list ….

What is “the list”?

Every business owner should build a list with people who potentially can buy from you. And I mean every business owner, even if you think it’s not necessary. This list can create more sales over time. It can upgrade your sales in times when sales are a bit low.

It also gives your potential clients time to make a decision to buy from you, instead of someone else. It gives you the opportunity to convince them your product is better. Your customer service is better. Everything is better when they buy from you.

It gives you the opportunity to provide “old” clients with information about upgrades or totally new products.

The list can created by providing a weekly or monthly or even quarterly newsletter. Or just to provide updates once in a while.

Or you can create a list by giving away a report, book or e-book, video’s, a course, discount, etc.

Just get that information from the people who are interested in what you have to offer. Maybe they never buy from you (which is probably 3% of less) or they buy from you next year (another 3%). That doesn’t matter. You always have the option to sell to them over and over again. At a very easy way. Who doesn’t want that?

Soooo, create that list. Give them something good in exchange for their name and email and even phone number (texting is the new emailing nowadays, but that is another post)

Adapting

The lack of adapting is often a reason why business’s fail.

The COVID-episode showed how quick business’s had to adapt or go under.

Restaurants suddenly had to switch to take out, just to keep money come in and be able to pay the rent. And they had to create something special to make people come to them.

Business’s with office’s suddenly had to create options for their people to be able to work from home.

Factories had to create safe spaces so production could continue.

In short, business’s had to figure out fast how to reach their clients and still be able to get the products or services to their clients without losing money.

Unfortunately, a lot of business’s couldn’t or wouldn’t do it. Some business’s, who were on the edge of closing doors already, gave up. Some owners just refused to change, some just couldn’t figure out how to change and some waited too late.

It was a hard and harsh lesson for a lot of business owners.

Always be ready to change. This time it was COVID, next time it is a competitor. Or a vendor who starts giving you trouble.

Never put all your eggs in one basket!!

On a positive note, a lot of people started to be creative and created their own business working from home.

Building

My husband has finally started with building a new deck.

17 Years ago, we moved into this house. And 17 years we are saying, we have to replace the deck in front of the house.

It is functional, or better was. But it is ugly, build terribly and too small to do anything with it, except for collecting recycle. And on top of that, it never felt save sitting on it 😦

So finally, we got the funds to replace it.

The old deck was placed on top of a couple of bricks. And kept in place because it was kind of attached to the house. The new deck will be placed on a solid foundation, on concrete pillars, which will last many years to come for sure. It also will be functional, so we can use it. And finally, the old recycled, in a previous life used as sliding doors, windows will be replaced by nice glass panels.

Looking forward to be able to sit there, out of the wind and enjoying the view.

Foundations..

Let’s talk foundations and how they are related to your business. Or your future business.

Let’s start with making a cake … (just “hear” me out)

When you are into baking and want to make a cake, you start with getting all the ingredients. And you will look for the good stuff. For instance, all the eggs should still be fresh. Flower should be without extra “protein”.

You also collect you tools, like a good working oven and the right form to bake your cake in.

But than …

Than you need the recipe. It is after all not useful to just throw everything in a bowl and put it in the oven.

The oven needs to be on the right temperature. The right amount of ingredients has to be mixed in the right way and right order. And the cake has to stay in the oven long enough the be ready to eat.

All these tools, but most of the recipe creates, the basis for a good cake. The foundation has to be right.

And the same should be for your business.

Having a great products and waiting till your clients come to the door to buy from you, won’t give you much sales. Or harassing friends and family for that matter. Telling everyone in the world about how good your product or service is ….. won’t give you much sales either. For both it will take a long time before you finally build your business.

For that reason, you need some knowledge and tools to get your business rolling a bit faster. Getting a good start within 90 days is way more fun, than hoping for years for clients to come.

Coaches for Coaches

Not a lot of people realize that coaches also can have coaches. I mean, … we are people too. We have our flaws too.

For me, I can say that I, on regular basis, am lost too. Doubt myself. Want to give up. Asking myself why I still looking for clients, when they clearly don’t are looking for me.

Yes, all the doubts and all the mindset problems and all the business problems you have …. we coaches have them too.

Funny thing is, we all are better in helping others than ourselves.

And for that reason, coaches also help coaches.

And that is why I have my chat in a group, every Friday before the days starts. We are a group of business coaches who do the same work, with the same tools. Only difference is that we have slightly different clients. But even when we have the same kind of clients, do you know how many people there are in this world? More than enough to share, that is for sure.

Scammers … or not??

Are coaches scammers or not?

Coaching is something what is overlooked by a lot of people and especially business owner.

Which is understandable when you look what coaches are offering, what they are NOT offering, how they are offering it, and especially, what kind of price ticket is added to it.

Some people a.k.a. the loudest people see, it as a scam. And these people don’t hold back on telling everyone why they think it is a scam. Even “colleague-“coaches do it.

Funny thing is that these kind of people never used a coach or run into one who didn’t deliver what was offered. And that cab happen, because of multiple reasons, and the coach isn’t always to blame.

And why fellow-coaches don’t hold back to tell how others are so bad? No clue. I only can think of that they feel threatened or don’t get enough clients and blame that on others.

For myself, I often let myself influence by these kind of negative people. Despite the fact that I have to tools to help them for sure. And because of that, I even offer to return their payments when they don’t get the expected results (as long as they have done the work of course). Not that this is a bad thing, because I know I almost am able to guarantee results. although there are always exceptions.

Anyhow, a coach is a good thing. Even this coach has a coach.

And if you are looking for any kind of coach, do your research. Talk to him/her before you start paying.
