Canada Day is an annual national holiday where the Canadians celebrate the country’s declaration of independence from Great Britain in 1867. Initially known as the Dominion of Canada, the newly formed nation remained closely tied to Great Britain. Canada than only existed out of four provinces, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, and Quebec.
Today, Canada consists of 10 provinces and 3 territories. Originally named Dominion Day, the holiday underwent a significant transformation in 1982 when Canada achieved full sovereignty from Great Britain.
Consequently, it was officially renamed Canada Day to reflect the nation’s newfound independence.
Fun fact (for me) we became official Canadians when we celebrated 150 years of Canada.
